What to Expect as a New Member

Most importantly, as a new member, we anticipate your regular attendance and participation in our singing activities. Membership involves dues of $130 per year, which are used to pay for administration of our society at the international, district and chapter levels.  If  payment of $130  “as a lump” is difficult to manage, we offer a pay-as-you-go plan in which a fraction of the annual dues will be deducted from your bank account or charged to your credit card account monthly. Eventually there will be other costs, like  tux trousers for your uniform, a tux dress shirt, and registration charges when you participate in an official BHS contest/convention.  We usually can help you get uniform items for a modest cost.

Your completed application and a check for dues (or pay- as- you-go  authorization) will be submitted to BHS by  David Adrion, our Secretary.  He will let you know when your membership is official.

When your application and dues are submitted, we will lend you a copy of the Barberpole Cat Song Book of 12 songs we all know.  We will also furnish a  cassette tape on which these 12 are recorded  -- for your use in practice, while BHS is processing your membership. Your voice part will be dominant in the songs recorded on one side of the cassette, while on the other side your voice part is suppressed, to see if you can sing your part alone.  These are songs you can sing with Barbershoppers everywhere.

Soon, your status will be confirmed by receiving a Membership Certificate at one of our Monday meetings, at which time you will also receive your own copy of the Barberpole Cat Song Book ( and you return the copy we lent you.). That’s the sign-up process in a nutshell, but not a comprehensive coverage of potential questions.  Please address unanswered questions to your sponsoring member or to Robbie Robbins, Membership V.P.

When you are officially a member, our music librarian will furnish you with sheets of the printed music which is then in our planned repertoire.  In some cases, we will also provide a “learning CD”  or a “learning cassette” pertaining to new songs we are all learning.
